Paul Weiss’ Strategic Rebalancing Accelerates as Litigators Weigh Market Options

In a recent Law.com article, Margie Grossberg, founder and CEO of Benchmark Legal Search Partners, discussed Paul Weiss’ continued evolution from a firm historically known for elite litigation into one increasingly defined by M&A, private equity and corporate work.

“There has been a significant rebalancing over the past 15 years, where the firm has intentionally and strategically prioritized corporate growth and transactional work,” Margie said. “Litigation remains elite but less core to the firm’s identity than it was traditionally known for.”

The article examines leadership changes at Paul Weiss, notable litigation departures, associate cuts and continued reaction to the firm’s agreement with the Trump administration, which Law.com reports has contributed to increased market conversations among litigators.

“The controversial agreement with the Trump administration, certainly as we understand it, accelerated departures and increased the number of people considering market options,” Margie said.

Paul Weiss continues to maintain a significant litigation department and has added high-profile litigation talent, but legal industry observers and recruiters told Law.com that the firm’s strategic identity has shifted as corporate growth and private equity work have become more central to its market position.

“I don’t see a mad rush for the door, but there are a number of partners and associates that have reached out to explore or consider the exploration of other market opportunities,” Margie said.
